The Boeing Company
Cash & Associates has provided
Architect-Engineer Services for projects at Boeing facilities in Long Beach,
Palmdale, Downey, Anaheim, and Huntington Beach, California. Examples of project
experience include:
BUILDING
150, NANA ORBITER HANGAR
USAF Plant 42, Palmdale, California
Prepared a comprehensive seismic strengthening/retrofit evaluation of an existing 120,000
square foot, single story, high bay structure used to house NASA Orbiter (Space Shuttle)
maintenance and modification operations. The study criteria involved preventing
damage to the Orbiter and Orbiter-related equipment while maximizing personnel
life-safety. Deficiencies were identified relevant to potential to damage the
Orbiter during a major seismic event along the San Andreas Fault.
BUILDING 004
SEISMIC SURVEY & RETROFIT
Downey, California
Preparation of a comprehensive structural/seismic survey and construction documents to
retrofit/upgrade an existing 240,000 SF single story, steel frame structure with concrete
walls and a poured gypsum roof. The study objective was to identify modifications
required to strengthen the structure to prevent loss of life during a Maximum Credible
Earthquake. Identified deficiencies included lack of capacity in the existing poured
gypsum roof and lack of seismic anchorage/bracing for equipment and interior components.
Retrofit measures developed included installation of steel framing to reduce shear
(seismic load) at boundaries. In addition to seismic retrofit measures, construction
documents included modifications to achieve building code compliance for such areas as
building corridors, exiting, and ADA accessibility. Although, the Downey plant was
abandoned before the retrofit was undertaken, Cash & Associates provided follow-on
assistance to various potential developers and the City of Downey.

VARIOUS FACILITY PROJECTS
Long Beach, California
Prior to closure of the majority of Boeing's Long Beach Plant, Cash & Associates
provided Architect-Engineer Services for a variety of projects ranging from new
construction to modification of existing facilities and miscellaneous site improvements at
Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas). Project examples include a new 12,500 square
foot central plant (see Facilities - Central Plants); modifications to a structural test
hangar to create a C-17 Aircraft Mission Control Sub-Subsystem Integration Laboratory; and
structural engineering services to support various plant electrical upgrades.
BOEING SPACE SYSTEMS
Huntington Beach, California
Architectural and structural engineering services for site preparations to facilitate
installation of a new top loading vapor degreasing system within an existing
building. Project scope included demolition of an existing non-compliant degreasing
system and development of area separation requirements. To facilitate installation
of new equipment, it was necessary to design modifications to existing walls and door
openings. In addition, a temporary visquened corridor was developed to avoid
contaminating a nearby cleanroom during construction. A new door, between the
degreaser and pit, was provided for maintenance purposes. All access ways and
penetrations outside the degreasing room were required to preserve the integrity of the
cleanroom by allowing positive room pressure. Other elements of the project included
relocation of existing mechanical and electrical systems, as well as a hydraulic
reservoir.
