Pier S, Berths S102-S110 Terminal
Port of Long Beach, California
Cash & Associates consulting services for Container Terminals
includes terminal and terminal gate planning and analysis. In addition to our
in-house capabilities, we have an established network of collaborating consultants that
allows us to address virtually every aspect of container terminals including planning and
design related to associated improvements such as dredging, container wharves, rail
facilities, traffic planning, bridges and grade separations, street and utility
modifications/relocations, and environmental concerns. The proposed Pier S Berths
Terminal is an example of our recent planning and design work. Cash & Associates
has been working with the Port of Long Beach since 2000 on development of the proposed
Pier S Terminal.
PLANNING
Cash & Associates led a multidiscipline team through a six month interactive planning
process to develop planning documents for a new 160-acre container terminal with two
20-acre satellite storage yards, on-dock rail yard, 3500' wharf, multi-modal storage
space, multiple buildings, modern ancillary facilities, and a 16-lane unmanned gate with
bi-directional traffic flow. The Pier S site, a historic oil well parcel,
contains numerous abandoned oil wells and remediated oil sump cells. Planning
included terminal sectional analysis and infrastructure location to provide transitional
flexibility for container storage, multiple terminal storage layouts for increasing
throughput, terminal storage capacity and throughput analysis, gate processing and sizing
analysis, and off-terminal traffic analysis. Planning deliverables included a Design
Criteria Manual, conceptual plans, construction costs and schedules.
DESIGN
Following completion of planning, Cash & Associates was
selected to provide overall program management and design services for the proposed Pier S
Terminal. Firm responsibilities include civil, structural, electrical and
architectural design, as well as sustainable design expertise and coordination of multiple
adjacent projects by others.
The proposed Pier S Terminal has been designed to incorporate the latest terminal
technologies and security components.
"GREEN" TERMINAL/SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
When constructed, the Pier S Terminal will be the Port's first "green",
environmentally friendly terminal. Cash & Associates is the project's
Sustainable Design Specialist. The focus of this work involves the incorporation of
U.S. Green Building Council LEEDTM measures into the terminal's 2-story
Administration Building to achieve USGBC "Silver" certification. The
project includes six approaches supporting sustainable site development, three
methodologies for reducing water usage an estimated 40%, seven steps toward more efficient
use of materials, and 12 strategies for achieving improved indoor environmental
quality. The other "green" terminal design component for which Cash &
Associates is responsible involves cold ironing infrastructure for the terminal wharf to
support the Port's commitment to reducing in-port vessel emissions.
URS|Cash & Associates have worked together on the Pier
S Terminal Project and are proud to support the Port of Long Beach's Green Port Policy.
